Frequently Asked Questions about Ortho-K with our Spring Optometrist

Woman with contact lens on her finger

In the past, nearsighted patients who didn't want to deal with eyeglasses or contact lenses had to rely on LASIK or other types of laser surgery to correct their vision.

At Today's Vision Family Eye Care, we're proud to offer another solution: orthokeratology, or ortho-k. Ortho-k can reduce your need for contact lenses or eyeglasses, without needing any type of laser or medical procedure. Our patients who are offered the chance at using orthokeratology have plenty of questions. Here are some of the most common ones.

What is Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology is a procedure using a special type of rigid gas permeable contact lens. You wear the lenses overnight while you sleep, during which time the lenses will gently change the shape of your corneas. When you wake up, you'll be able to see clearly without using any type of contacts or eyeglasses.

Who Can Use Ortho-K?

There are two basic uses for orthokeratology: to correct refractive errors in the eyes (mostly nearsightedness, but sometimes astigmatism or farsightedness) and to prevent children with nearsightedness from developing a worse vision. Anyone with mild to moderate vision problems can be a candidate for this treatment, including older children and young adults.

How Does Ortho-K Work?

While you are asleep, the special shape of the ortho-k lens gently causes your corneas to change shape, to one that allows you to see clearer. The effect lasts from 24 to 48 hours after the lenses are removed. Your clear vision will begin to fade after the first day, so our doctors advise that you wear them every night while you sleep to keep a consistent clear vision.

How Can I Get Orthokeratology?

After a comprehensive eye examination, our optometrist will discuss your vision correction options. If you're a good candidate for ortho-k, you'll discuss it with the doctor during your exam. We can have the lenses made for you just like any other contact lenses, and we can have them ready for you to begin treatment in just a week or two in most cases.
